midwestern music

Posted in fashion by clairedille on August 5, 2009

After a weekend away with a friend, living in a two bedroom cottage and spending hours lounging on the beach, I finally began to embrace summer. Dressing for summer is different then taking in the simple pleasures that make a summer ideal. We all have our own bits of nostalgia that make a summer complete and one of my personal favorites is the act of listening to music on the grass. Whether it was listening to the bandstand on a Martha’s Vineyard night or heading to Central Park for some Beastie Boys, summer listening is just too good to be true. These images of Sheila Marquez shot by Rony Shram are subtly beautiful and rustic. Anyone who says they don’t enjoy a pair of overalls must be lying, because they are ultimate comfort and the childhood version of the romper. Preparing for the music festival, Lollapalooza, this upcoming weekend, I am packing boots (although not over-the-knee), shorts, a jean jacket, floral bustier, summer dress, racerback tanks, gladiator sandals, leggings, a romper and tank jumpsuit, and loose tees.

Lastly, my growing-out bangs are channeling Sheila’s right now.

L’Officiel Marion

Posted in fashion by clairedille on July 31, 2009

I have yet to see Public Enemies with Marion but she was truly amazing in La Vie En Rose. These candid-like shots aren’t what you would expect from an editorial but I find them refreshing. Marion is ever so charming and sexy at the same time. I also must note that one reason I am so drawn to these images is because of her flawlessly simple make-up and slicked back hair.

glitzy shoulders

These new shots of Anja in Vogue Nippon clearly have 80’s glam written all over them. Although we may find ourselves becoming quite sick of the same styles being shot over and over again, I cannot help but find myself swooning over the jewels, clutches, and bedazzled shouldered dresses. Anja is always a favorite and the black and white images solidify my envy for her stunning statuesque features.

watch the cracks.

It feels rather silly to bring up the beauty of the photographs from the Jak & Jil blog, but after glancing over the two most recent images posted today, I felt complete nostalgia. Just over two years ago, I traveled throughout Europe with four inch heels in tow. I wore them as much as physically possible amongst my peers sporting flip flops and chuck taylors. Of course I wore my flats most of the day, but whenever an opportunity arose to add some height to my petite frame, I slipped on my topshop pumps. The streets of Amsterdam, London, Paris, and Barcelona ruined each pair of heels I had brought and bought along the way. The cobblestone tore apart the leather and wore down the soles. This shot is the perfect portrayal of a fresh pair of heels hitting the streets of Paris.

Another shot of fabulous photographer, illustrator, and writer , Garance Doré, wearing an envious pair of Pierre Hardy’s has me in awe of the fact that she can spend all day photographing others ensembles in some towering mesh booties of her own.

sydney reveries.

Posted in fashion, home by clairedille on July 6, 2009

After the somewhat recent fashion week in Sydney, many fashion photographers have  captured quality images of the people and scenery that has left me quite inspired. The always superb site, The Selby, found a home that has both charm and high fashion elegance. The polaroid covered refrigerator and the chalkboard kitchen cabinets portray such a fun amount of personality. The clothes hung up against the wall favor simplicity and the love of a garments beauty. The mirrored window and old school red telephone add a touch of rustic charm. Lastly, my favorite part of most homes are the few items that people choose to put on their dressers.

And who doesn’t love to see how people keep and display their clothing?

a little LA love

Posted in fashion by clairedille on June 14, 2009

As of late, I find myself more and more intrigued by the west coast. I am a true NYC girl at heart but sometimes life gets in the way and we have to think about other options. This Hanne Gabby Odiele editorial for Vogue Germany documents the carefree nature of LA that is so enticing.

romping around

Posted in fashion by clairedille on May 29, 2009

It seems as though rompers have been all the rage this spring. With Memorial Day, the unofficial start of summer, behind us, it is time to find some effortless pieces for our warm weather closets. Personally, I adore both the full length jumpsuit as well as the short romper style. The jumpsuit is the perfect piece for dressing up or down whether you are pairing it with a sleek blazer or some toms flats. Silk automatically adds a wow factor to the simplicity of the garment and linen is the ideal relaxing summer fabric. The always lovely Style.com gave us a round-up of some of their enviable choices and Refinery29 shared pieces ranging from 3.1 Phillip Lim to Urban Outfitters. Of course Shopbop has pulled together more possibilities without disappointment.

Here are two of my casual vintage rompers that I will be hopping around the city in as the temp creeps up.

Easy ways to dress a little more playful.

This morning, I caught a glimpse of one of my all time favorite films, the ever-so-popular Almost Famous. Penny Lane really pulls off the crop top trend and the first encounter we have with her is the most memorable. The white lace crop top is the ideal summer concert garment. Topshop’s lace number is what I will be picking up  to keep nice and cool in the late summer heat.

Although I will be pairing the top with my old levi cutoffs, I have found myself inspired by all the muted bright colors shown on the Spring 2009 runway. The pinks and teals paired with black and grey at the Alexander Wang show are just what a savvy urbanite needs for relaxed summer style.

For a more wearable approach, I am loving the subtle acid washed shorts found at Madewell, Topshop, and Net-A-Porter.

A loose grey racerback tank and a nude or black woven sandal would be great for a summer-in-the-city look. To convert the outfit from day to night I will slip on a pair of wedges and a loose fitting blazer.

fashion saves

Posted in fashion by clairedille on May 6, 2009

I wandered over to Port Authority yesterday for the Save Fashion installment set up by Refinery29. After months of following Joy Gryson’s handbag designs, I knew that I had to investigate the sale in order to find the perfect going-out bag. Usually a fan of pretty substantial sized bags, I knew it was becoming impractical to constantly be searching for possessions each night I go out on the town. The Gryson bag I picked up was marked down almost 80%, just too good to pass up. Some favorite features are the tubular top handle and the chain strap which add just a little bit of edginess while still staying true to my usually simple style aesthetic.

Other purchases included a Wren dove grey jumper/mini and a Catherine Holstein mustard yellow merino wool cardigan.
